FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a Question?

We know bringing home a puppy is a big decision, and we want you to feel informed every step of the way.

Below are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often. If you don’t see your question here, please don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re always happy to help.

Why did you choose Cardigan Welsh Corgis?

We fell in love with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi because of their intelligence, loyalty, versatility, and unique personalities. They are incredibly adaptable dogs that thrive as family companions, performance dogs, farm dogs, and adventure partners.

While they may share the “Corgi” name with the Pembroke, Cardigans are a separate breed with a rich history dating back thousands of years.

How are your puppies raised?

Our puppies are born and raised inside our home, where they are exposed to everyday household life from the very beginning.

They receive Early Neurological Stimulation ENS, Early Scent Introduction ESI, age-appropriate socialization, grooming introduction, crate exposure, and plenty of positive experiences to help prepare them for life with their new families.

Why don’t your puppies go home at 8 weeks?

Our puppies remain with us until at least 12 weeks of age.

Those additional weeks allow us to continue socialization, confidence-building, grooming practice, crate introduction, and other important developmental experiences.

It also allows time for the Bordetella vaccination to become effective before puppies begin traveling to their new homes.

We believe those extra weeks provide lifelong benefits and help set our puppies up for success.

Can I choose my puppy?

Absolutely—but with guidance.

After spending weeks raising and evaluating each puppy, we have a thorough understanding of their personalities, confidence levels, energy, and temperament.

Rather than matching puppies solely by color or markings, we work with each family to recommend the puppy that best fits their lifestyle and goals.

Do you breed for color?

No.

While Cardigan Welsh Corgis come in many beautiful colors and patterns, color is never our primary goal.

Our breeding decisions are based on health, temperament, structure, movement, pedigree, and overall compatibility.

If a unique color is produced through a carefully planned breeding, that’s simply an added bonus.

Are your breeding dogs health tested?

Yes.

Our breeding dogs undergo DNA health testing and we are implementing PennHIP evaluations as part of our ongoing commitment to producing healthy, structurally sound Cardigan Welsh Corgis.

Health testing is only one part of our evaluation process. We also consider temperament, pedigree, structure, longevity, and overall health when making breeding decisions.

Are your puppies registered?

Yes.

Our puppies are registered with the American Kennel Club AKC when applicable.

Registration paperwork is provided according to the terms of each puppy’s placement.

Do you sell breeding rights?

Breeding rights are offered only on a very limited basis.

Our primary focus is placing puppies in loving companion homes.

Full registration may be considered for established breeders whose goals align with our breeding philosophy. Approval is never automatic and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Do you offer a health guarantee?

Yes.

Every puppy is backed by a written health guarantee.

We encourage every family to carefully review our contract and ask questions before placing a deposit so everyone understands the terms and expectations.

Do you ship puppies?

We do not ship puppies as cargo.

Depending on the situation, we may offer ground transportation, flight nanny services, or meet families at an agreed-upon location. We are also happy to meet in town at a safe, public location if you would like to meet your puppy in person.

Ground and flight nanny transport is often handled by our retired parents, who provide attentive, hands-on care during travel.

Transportation pricing varies based on factors such as fuel, food, lodging, and travel time.

Our priority is ensuring every puppy travels safely and with as little stress as possible.

Can I visit the puppies?

For the safety of our family, dogs, and puppies, we do not allow home visits.

We understand that meeting puppies in person is important to many families, and we are happy to provide regular updates, photos, videos, and virtual communication so you can watch your puppy grow and feel connected throughout the process. We are also able to meet in town if you would like to meet the puppy in person.

How do I reserve a puppy?

The first step is completing our puppy application.

Once approved, families may join our reservation list with a $500 non-refundable deposit, which is applied toward the total purchase price of their puppy.

Do you stay in touch after puppies go home?

Absolutely!

One of the best parts of breeding is watching our puppies grow up.

We love receiving photos, updates, holiday pictures, birthday celebrations, and hearing about your adventures together.

Our puppy families become part of the Shadey Lane family, and we’re always here if you need advice or support.

Still Have Questions?

We’re always happy to help.

Whether you’re just beginning your search or are ready to welcome a Cardigan into your home, we’d love to answer your questions and help you determine if a Shadey Lane puppy is the right fit for your family.
