What Do We Look for at Shadey Lane Corgis When Making Pairing Decisions?

One of the questions I get asked the most is, “How do you decide which dogs to breed together?”

The answer is simple: there is never just one reason. Every pairing is carefully planned months (and sometimes years) in advance. We look at the whole dog—not just color, not just pedigree, and certainly not just popularity.

Here’s what we’re evaluating:

🐾 Temperament
This will always be at the top of our list. We want confident, stable, friendly Cardigans that can thrive as family companions. A beautiful dog without the right temperament simply isn’t what we’re trying to produce.

🏆 Structure & Build
We evaluate each dog’s strengths and weaknesses and pair dogs that complement one another. Our goal isn’t to create a “perfect” dog—it’s to produce puppies that are an improvement on the generation before them.

🧬 Health Testing & Genetics
Every planned breeding starts with health testing and genetic compatibility. We review DNA results, health clearances, and pedigrees to reduce the risk of inherited diseases while maintaining genetic diversity whenever possible.

🎨 Color Genetics
Color is probably the most misunderstood part of breeding. While we love the variety found in Cardigan Welsh Corgis, color is never the driving force behind a pairing. We use DNA testing to understand what each dog carries so we can make informed, responsible decisions and avoid combinations that could produce preventable health concerns.

📜 Pedigrees
Pedigrees tell a story. We spend a lot of time researching the dogs behind our dogs—their health, structure, longevity, temperament, and consistency. Sometimes the best match isn’t the closest dog geographically—it’s the one that brings the qualities we’re looking to preserve.

❤️ Personality
Every dog has a unique personality. Some are outgoing and social butterflies, while others are calm, thoughtful, and observant. We enjoy pairing personalities that we believe will consistently produce well-rounded puppies.

🏡 Motherhood
This may surprise some people, but we also evaluate our girls as mothers. Did she genuinely enjoy raising her puppies? Was she attentive? Did she have plenty of milk? Was she confident and nurturing? We believe maternal instincts matter and are part of the overall picture when deciding whether a female continues in our breeding program.

📈 What They Produce
Perhaps the biggest evaluation happens after the puppies are born. Every litter teaches us something. We look at consistency in structure, temperament, movement, health, and overall quality. If a pairing doesn’t produce the results we’re striving for, we make changes. Even dogs we absolutely adore may be retired from our program if we feel they aren’t moving us toward our goals.

At Shadey Lane Corgis, every breeding is a long-term investment in the future of our program and, more importantly, the future of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Sometimes that means repeating a pairing because it exceeded our expectations. Other times it means changing course completely based on what we’ve learned.

Our goal has never been to produce the most puppies—it has always been to produce the best companions we possibly can while preserving everything that makes this breed so special.

Why Temperament Comes First at Shadey Lane Corgis

When people think about responsible breeding, they often think about health testing, pedigrees, or beautiful coats. While all of those things matter, the very first thing we look at here at Shadey Lane Corgis is temperament.

After all, your puppy won’t spend most of its life standing in a show stack—it will spend it curled up on your couch, playing with your children, hiking trails, riding in the truck, or following you from room to room. A wonderful companion starts with a wonderful temperament.

What We Look For

We strive to produce Cardigan Welsh Corgis that are:

• Confident without being pushy.
• Friendly with people while remaining true to the breed.
• Curious and willing to explore new environments.
• Able to recover quickly from new or unexpected experiences.
• Intelligent and eager to learn.
• Affectionate without being overly dependent.

Every adult in our program is evaluated daily—not just during formal training or events. We watch how they interact with visitors, children, other dogs, livestock, and everyday life on the farm.

Temperament Is More Than Genetics

While genetics play a significant role, environment matters too. That’s why our puppies are raised inside our home and are introduced to a variety of sights, sounds, surfaces, people, and experiences during their critical developmental weeks.

Early neurological stimulation, age-appropriate socialization, and positive experiences help build confidence alongside the temperament they inherit from their parents.

Why It Matters

A beautiful dog means very little if it struggles to be a confident family companion. We would much rather produce a puppy that becomes someone’s best friend for the next 15 years than one that simply photographs well.

Temperament will always be one of the most important pieces of every breeding decision we make. It’s one of the many ways we work to preserve everything we love about the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
