Our Breeding Philosophy

We genetically test our dogs!

We genetically test our dogs!

At Shadey Lane Corgis, our dogs are family, and every puppy we raise is loved from the very beginning. We are deeply committed to producing healthy, happy puppies by carefully selecting our breeding dogs and completing comprehensive health testing. Each puppy is raised in our home with constant care, affection, and early socialization, helping them grow into confident, well-adjusted companions. We pour our hearts into every litter, and it shows in the puppies we place with their forever families.

The health of our dogs and puppies is something I take incredibly seriously. Every dog in our breeding program is health tested through Embark or GenSol—many through both—to give us the most complete picture possible. This testing allows us to identify whether our dogs are clear or carriers of conditions such as DM, EIC, VWD1, and many other inherited diseases. With this knowledge, we are able to make responsible breeding decisions and give families peace of mind, knowing their new puppy is not at risk for the common genetic diseases seen in Cardigan Welsh Corgis.

Lifetime support

Lifetime support

Even after your puppy goes home, my support never ends. I am always just a message away for any questions or concerns—no matter how big or small. I truly love staying in touch with my puppy families and cherish every update, photo, and milestone as they grow. Watching my puppies thrive in their new homes is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Socialization

Lifetime support

Another very important part of our program is proper, safe socialization. This begins on day one, right here in my home. Our puppies are handled daily, cuddled often, and raised with constant love and attention. As they grow and begin to see and hear the world around them, we slowly and safely introduce them to our adult dogs—including our Saint Bernard, who is absolutely obsessed with snuggling our sweet babies.

Once the puppies have received their first set of vaccinations, the real adventures begin. They are carefully introduced to the outside world, where they get to meet a few approved, well-mannered dogs and experience new sights such as our cows and the neighbor’s horses. While Cardigan Welsh Corgis are a herding breed with natural instincts, we do not train our puppies for herding.

Socialization also includes meeting new people beyond my home. I take the puppies to pet-friendly stores and nursing homes so they can experience a variety of environments, sounds, and gentle interactions. For their safety, while we are out in public, the puppies are never allowed to touch the ground. Every step of our socialization process is designed to build confident, well-adjusted puppies while keeping their health and well-being our top priority.

I am extremely proud to be a GoodDog–approved breeder. Becoming approved through GoodDog required completing a thorough application process, ensuring my breeding practices meet their standards for responsible breeding. For full transparency, all of my dogs’ Embark and GenSol health testing results are available for viewing directly on my GoodDog breeder page. I believe honesty, accountability, and openness are essential when trusting someone with your future puppy.

Go Home Bags!

I absolutely love spoiling both my puppies and their new families, so our go-home bags are definitely a little extra. Each puppy goes home with everything they need to start their new life comfortably and confidently. Whenever possible, the go-home bags are themed to match the litter, making them even more special.

Every puppy is sent home with an unopened bag of their current food, a collapsible bowl, leash, collar, custom bandana, custom blanket, treats, toys, and a few extra surprises I can’t resist adding along the way. And it’s not just about the puppies—I make sure our new puppy parents are spoiled too. Sending my babies off well-prepared and well-loved is just one more way I show how much I care.

ENS and ESI training

ENS and ESI training

ENS and ESI training

What? You haven’t heard of ENS and ESI training?

Let me tell you—this is, hands down, one of the most important aspects of my breeding program.

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) was developed by the U.S. Military as part of their “Bio Sensor” or “Super Puppy” program. It focuses on supporting puppies during one of the most critical windows of their development.

Dogs are considered an altricial species, meaning puppies are born completely dependent. At birth, they cannot see, hear, regulate their body temperature, or even eliminate on their own. They are limited to very small movements and remain in this fragile, helpless stage until roughly 2–3 weeks of age, depending on the breed.

Around 2–3 weeks old, puppies begin to open their eyes, hear sounds, move more confidently, and gain basic independence. But it is the short window between birth and this early self-sufficiency that makes ENS so impactful.

ENS works by gently stimulating the puppies’ developing nervous systems during this time. It is based on the principle of eustress—healthy, beneficial stress. Unlike distress, which is overwhelming and harmful, eustress is the kind of stress that helps build strength and resilience. It’s the same idea behind exercise: challenging the body in a controlled way helps it grow stronger.

Think of ENS as a tiny workout for the puppies’ nervous systems. These brief, carefully controlled exercises help encourage proper neurological development without overwhelming the puppy.

We’ve all heard stories of dogs who struggle with fear, anxiety, new environments, or unfamiliar people. ENS has been shown to help reduce these issues by promoting confidence, adaptability, and emotional resilience. Puppies who receive ENS are often better equipped to handle change and stress throughout their lives, creating a stronger, more fulfilling bond between dog and owner.

ENS is only the first step. The developmental stage that follows is the socialization period, which is just as critical. ENS helps prepare puppies for this next phase—when they begin learning how to interact with humans, other dogs, and even other species. By starting this work early, we set our puppies up with the emotional foundation they need to confidently explore the world around them.

This intentional, early investment helps ensure our puppies grow into well-rounded, confident companions who are ready to thrive in their forever homes.

Early Scent Introduction (ESI) works hand-in-hand with ENS and focuses on developing the puppies’ sense of smell during those same early, critical days of life.
A dog’s sense of smell is one of their most powerful tools—it plays a huge role in confidence, learning, emotional regulation, and how they experience the world. During the first couple weeks of life, puppies’ brains are rapidly developing, and gentle scent exposure can help stimulate neural pathways tied to curiosity, problem-solving, and stress resilience.
ESI involves introducing puppies to a variety of safe, carefully selected scents for very short periods of time. These scents may include things like herbs, natural materials, or environmental smells they may encounter later in life. Just like ENS, this exposure is done in a controlled, positive way and is never overwhelming.
The goal of ESI is not to train puppies for scent work, but to help them develop a strong, confident relationship with their environment. Puppies who receive ESI often show improved adaptability, confidence in new situations, and a greater ability to cope with unfamiliar experiences as they grow.
When paired with ENS, ESI helps lay a strong neurological and emotional foundation before puppies even reach their socialization period. This preparation allows them to move into the next stages of development—meeting new people, animals, places, and sounds—with curiosity instead of fear.
Together, ENS and ESI are powerful tools that help shape emotionally balanced, confident puppies who are better prepared to handle the world around them and build strong, trusting relationships with their future families.
